Things I like!

こんにちは!

わたしのしゅみはおんがくとゲームです。わたしは マリアッチ (Mariachi) おんがくのクラシック (Classical) おんがくがだいすきです!

For today's blog post I wanted to share my love for playing violin! I have played violin for 10 years, and I always did Orchestral Ensembles, focusing on classical music until I got here to Notre Dame! I wanted to explore new forms of music, as well as connecting with the Mexican side of me so I joined Mariachi ND!

I had the opportunity to play with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra twice in High School, getting to play one of the coolest pieces ever composed, Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Márquez! I highly recommend it if you're interested in exploring a combination of contemporary sounds with classical music. I used to not be very great at playing violin, but I worked really hard in high school to practice and learn from those around me who were better than me. It was always so much fun!

Laufey played on this stage a few months after I got to!! (I love Laufey!!)

Side-by-Side with the Pittsburgh Symphony!

As for Mariachi, I frequently grew up listening to some of the most iconic songs at parties or events, sometimes listening on my own when I found some songs I liked. Upon joining the club, I was immediately bombarded with music, thankfully I had heard those songs before, so I had some idea of what I was doing, and soon I was also performing with the Mariachi! Just like Mariachi as a whole though, my Dad is from the state of Jalisco in Mexico, meaning my whole family on his side is super proud and happy that I'm in a Mariachi after years of being in Orchestra. Truly, I find it much more fulfilling and enjoyable, especially since this weekend was full of playing serenades all around Notre Dame!

Last semester after Guadalupe Mass, before I cut my long hair!

First performance of this semester, a birthday party!

Music will always hold an incredibly important space in my heart, and I hope to continue playing violin for as many years as possible! If you ever want orchestral or Mariachi music recommendations, I am always available for suggestions, and I gladly accept any recommendations too!!

  2. I love all of these photos! It is really cool that you got to perform on the same stage that Laufey did!
